About the position
Our client an ophthalmologist in Randburg, Johannesburg is seeking to recruit a Practice Assistant to attend to clinical and patient centred functions of the practice. They would also have responsibilities in terms of administrative and billing functions within the practice.
Responsibilities:
Patient Liaison
- Assist with queries and communication from patients contacting the practice
- Assist with follow up of patients in between appointments
- Together with reception staff, attend to patient bookings and registrations
Clinical Support
- Assist with assessment of patients within the clinical consultation. This would include visual acuity and intraocular pressure checks, taking of a clinical history, and performing ocular tests such as OCTs, colour photographs, biometry and visual field testing.
Surgery Support
- Prepare theatre lists
- Be the clinical liaison between Dr and hospital staff
- Make follow up calls to patients before and after surgery or procedures
Billing and admin
- Order and maintain stock and equipment requirements
- Invoice patients and process payments
- Process claims timeously, follow up on short payments and rejections, attend to patient liable amounts
- Facilitate quotations, authorisations and admissions.
- General administrative tasks
- Oversee accurate transfer of information to patient electronic files and ensure that all patient records are complete
- Ensure practice policies and best practices are up to industry standards and government regulations.
Skills and Attributes required:
- Professionalism in liaising with patients to promote the patient-doctor interaction

- Good computer skills including managing cloud-based data and use of Microsoft
- Experience of myMPS or Elixir billing
- Experience in dealing with Medical Aid companies, specifically related to authorisations
Qualifications:
- Matric certificate
- At least 3 years experience in medical practice administration and billing
- Excellent English: ability to assist patients in other South African languages is an advantage
- General clinical and Ophthalmology experience beneficial.
Working Hours:
- Monday to Thursday, 8am - 4pm
- Friday, 8am - 2pm
